ANN ARBOR (WWJ/AP) - A man who pleaded guilty to providing a dose of illegal drugs that killed a University of Michigan music student has been sentenced to 5 to 20 years in prison.

Twenty-year-old Brandon Phillips learned his punishment Thursday for selling heroin and cocaine to 20-year-old Bruce Ketterer. Phillips pleaded guilty in January to delivery of a controlled substance causing death.

Washtenaw Trial Court Judge Darlene O'Brien says Phillips got less time than sentencing guidelines suggest because he had no prior convictions as an adult or as a minor.

Ketterer was found dead by his roommates at their rented house on May 26. An autopsy later confirmed "significant levels of THC, cocaine and heroin" and the medical examiner ruled the manner of death accidental, The Ann Arbor News reported.

Police said that Phillips made a remark to them that he wanted to become the go-to heroin dealer for University of Michigan students.
