Car Stolen In Redford With Children Inside; Mother Chases Suspect Down

REDFORD (WWJ) -- Police are investigating a case where a mother left her young children inside of her running vehicle which was carjacked at repair shop in Redford on Monday.

The mother stood in the doorway of Walsh's Service on Seven Mile east of Beech Daly while she watched her vehicle around 11 a.m. She then saw someone get in her vehicle and drive, with the children still inside.

The mother and the owner of the shop followed the suspect in another vehicle for a few blocks before the suspect parked the victim's vehicle and walked away.

Rich Walsh, the man who runs the shop, helped the woman track the vehicle down.

"She told me that the kids were in it and said she didn't know who was driving it," Walsh said. "She was chasing him on foot, which you can't really chase a car on foot. I got in the car and picked her up. we pursued the car for about four blocks and he decided to ditch the car at that point."

Once they caught up with the suspect, the woman confronted him before he bolted away.

"She made sure, at that point, that her kids were safe and then she was confronting him about where her phone was," Walsh said. "He continued on foot and we got back in our respective cars and found her phone a few blocks away."

The children were unharmed. The suspect was not known to the victim.

The suspect is described as a white male 5-foot-2 or 5-foot-3 with a medium build, a scruffy beard and mustache in his mid 20s wearing a light blue sweatshirt with a dark blue stripe on the sleeves and a black hat.
