Oak Park Jewish Center Could Close In Summer Without Funding Source
OAK PARK (AP) - Operations at the financially-troubled Jewish Community Center in Oak Park could cease this summer unless a funding source is found to close a $1.3 million budget shortfall.
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit spokesman Howard Neistein says recommendations have been approved this month by various boards to end programs and services Aug. 31 at the Jimmy Prentis Morris Building north of Detroit.
The Jewish Community Center's main campus is in West Bloomfield.
Neistein says the organization currently manages the Oak Park facility and may rent space there for programs and services If a new operator is found.
Closing the facility is expected to eliminate at least $800,000 in annual losses.
Residents in and around Oak Park are mounting a fundraising campaign to keep the facility open.
