I-94 Shut Down This Weekend For M-1 Rail Construction In Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - A section of I-94 in Detroit will be closed in both directions this weekend in Detroit so crews can work on the M-1 Rail project.
M-DOT plans to close I-94 between I-75 and the Lodge Freeway beginning around 9 p.m. Friday, with all lanes expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, March 16.
The closure will enable construction crews to install 10 steel beams on the west half (southbound lanes) of the new Woodward Avenue overpass above I-94. The beams will support the new, concrete bridge deck where vehicles, pedestrians and the M-1 Rail streetcars will travel. Once installed on the bridge sub-structure, the length for each beam will be approximately 232 feet.
During the closure, westbound I-94 motorists will be directed to southbound I-75, then westbound I-96 and back onto westbound I-94. Eastbound I-94 motorists will be directed to eastbound I-96, then northbound I-75 and back onto eastbound I-94. One lane will remain open for local traffic on eastbound I-94 from I-96 to M-10. In addition, the northbound and southbound M-10 ramps to westbound I-94 will remain open.
After the weekend closure, M-1 will continue to have one lane open in each direction over I-94, with a center turn lane. All traffic will continue to be maintained on the east side (northbound lanes) of the structure. In addition, the John R. Road entrance ramp to westbound I-94, and the eastbound I-94 exit ramp to John R. Road will remain closed.
