MDOT To Discuss I-75/University Drive 'Diverging Diamond Interchange' Replacement

AUBURN HILLS (WWJ) - Diverging diamond interchanges -- Popular Science thinks they're a crown jewel in the future of transportation and now, one is coming to Oakland County.

MDOT hosting two open houses Thursday about the I-75/University Drive interchange replacement -- at 2 p.m. and at 6 p.m. -- at the Auburn Hills Community Center on Squirrel Road.

Residents attending the meeting will have the opportunity to learn details about the upcoming project, which will include a diverging diamond interchange type of roadway.

Scheduled to begin in April, the project includes reconstructing University Drive from Opdyke Road to Cross Creek Road, including the interchange with I-75. The University Drive/I-75 interchange will be replaced with a diverging diamond interchange. The project also includes constructing a multi-use path, new signs, new traffic signals, streetscape enhancements, decorative lighting, and landscaping improvements.

Construction on the $25 million project is expected to be complete by December, with restoration work scheduled in spring 2016.
