When Do We See Proof Of Spring?

EAST LANSING (WWJ) - The snow has melted off your lawn. When will that grass finally bounce back? March 20 is the first day of spring, so when can we expect to see the telltale signs?

Frank Telewski, Professor of Plant Biology at Michigan State University tells WWJ's Zahra Huber, if we continue to get mild weather, we can expect to see flowers bloom within the next few weeks and grass growing as well.

"In those patches where a lot of that snow has melted off and already on the grass, it should really start showing some activity fairly quickly," said Telewski. "It should start greening up - start to look really nice and when we start to get temperatures in the 50s ... we should see some growth - begin to look like it might need some mowing."

With temps continuing in the 50s we could be contemplating mowing the lawn sooner than later.

"Our cherry trees will probably be one of the earlier flowering trees that will bloom. Silver Maples will likely be the first trees to actually start bloom - they have kind of a reddish flower, kind of small, not very showy."
