David Price Will Start On Tigers Opening Day

CBS DETROIT - Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus has named David Price the starter for Opening Day, the team announced Friday morning.

The choice comes as a bit of a surprise considering Justin Verlander, to whom the Tigers gave a monstrous contract in 2013, has started Opening Day each of the last seven seasons.

Verlander struggled last season, however, turning in one of the worst years of his career, and Price pitched well after joining the Tigers at the trade deadline. Price will be a free agent following the 2015 season, but he has said he is open to signing a contract extension with the Tigers rather than hitting the open market.

Last season Ausmus named Verlander, who had an mediocre season in 2013, as the Opening Day starter over Max Scherzer, who won the Cy Young in 2013.
