Two Women Shot During Melee At Union Hall

By Christy Strawser
PITTSFIELD TWP. (CBS Detroit) Two women were shot when a large fight broke out early Sunday morning at a UAW hall in rural Pittsfield Township, near Ann Arbor, police said.

A 22 year-old Ypsilanti resident was transported to St. Joe's Hospital, and a 28-year-old woman from Ann Arbor was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center, where they're expected to recover from their wounds, police said. One suffered a gunshot to the stomach; the other was shot in the leg.

Police say there were several shooters involved in the incident but they haven't arrested any suspects. It's unknown how many people inside the UAW were carrying weapons, or whether they were licensed to carry concealed.

"Right now, I'm not sure what their status is at the hospital, but I know the investigators are still gathering witnesses," said Pittsfield Township Deputy Chief Gordy Schick.

He added between 150 and 300 people were at the hall for birthday parties. The fight began after 2 a.m. when groups from different parties "had words" in the parking lot, police said. Gunfire erupted from different sides of the building, with both victims hit near the front of the facility.

"It was 'bring your own beverage,' and it sounds like the facility just became overcrowded," Schick said.

He added there was no special event permit pulled for a large event at the hall, which is required for gatherings of this size.

"We heard there were multiple shots, 5-7 shots from behind the building and in front of the building," Schick said.

Friends transported the victims to the hospital on their own, and began calling police on the way. Others started calling 911 from the hall and from the hospital.

"It was a little bit hectic initially, we had no idea how many victims there would be, there was also a crowd control issue," Schick said.

Anyone who has information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Pittsfield Township Department of Public Safety at 734-822-4911. You can remain anonymous by contacting our tip line at 734-822-4958.
