Quick Thinking By Sheriff Helps Save Men And Dog From Burning Home

INKSTER (CBS DETROIT) - Quick thinking by a Wayne County Sheriff's sergeant helps save the life of two men -- and a dog.

Sergeant Phillip Migliaccio was on road patrol in Inkster when he saw smoke coming from a home on Moore Street near Inkster Road reports WWJ's Zahra Huber.

The front of the house was completely engulfed in fire.

Migliaccio went to the back of the house, after pulling down part of a privacy fence, to find a 74-year-old man standing near the side door stairs.

Sheriff's spokesman Dennis Niemic says not only did Migliaccio stop the man from going back inside his home for his car keys -- he also called fire crews to the scene to rescue a 45-year-old man and a dog who were still inside the home.

"It was getting that information from the gentleman and keeping the gentleman from going back into the house that was pretty striking in this case -- so some quick action by Sgt. Migliaccio led the firefighters to get the one gentleman out," said Niemic.

The 45-year-old man is in critical condition. The older man and the dog are okay.

Niemic said it's a reminder of the job that law enforcement does everyday. "In this case you have police, firefighters, dispatch."
