Federal Agency To End Management Of Detroit's Public Housing

DETROIT (AP) — The federal government says it's ending 10 years of management of Detroit's public housing system and restoring it to local control.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the action Monday. It says that U.S. Housing Secretary Julian Castro will join Mayor Mike Duggan on Tuesday morning at a news conference in Detroit to discuss the change.

The federal department took over the Detroit Housing Commission in 2005 because of a variety of mismanagement issues. They included financial record problems, poor living conditions and failure to carry out construction projects.

HUD spokesman George Gonzalez says that the Detroit Housing Commission "has demonstrated consistent accountability and progress."
