Maintenance Work Begins On Blue Water Bridge

PORT HURON (WWJ) - Drivers who frequent Port Huron's Blue Water Bridge will start to see some slowdown's as roadwork begins.

Diane Cross is with the Michigan Department of Transportation. She said the work being conducted on the bridge linking Michigan and Canada is pretty normal.

"We'll be taking off ... the top layer of the roadway and replacing that, again, that's part of maintenance, in keeping the bridge lasting as long as possible," said Cross.

The project is focused on the portion of the bridge built in the late 1920's.

"We'll also be doing water-proofing to the bridge underneath - again - we are near water and we have to consider that kind of thing ... we think this will hold us for a few more years," said Cross.

Cross said the project, which started Sunday, is slated for completion by July. The project is costing M-DOT $4 million, while Canada will contribute $3 million.
