2 Motorcyclists In Critical Condition After Crashing Into Car That Apparently Ran Red Light
DETROIT (WWJ) - Two motorcyclists are fighting for their lives after being involved in a serious accident on Detroit's west side.
The accident happened just after 4 a.m. Thursday on McNichols Road at Hubbell Avenue, in a neighborhood west of the Lodge Freeway.
Police say it appears that two motorcycles traveling west on McNichols broadsided a northbound-traveling car that apparently ran a red light on Hubbell.
"The lights are functional, the intersection is well-lit," Detective John Velasco told WWJ's Mike Campbell.
Both motorcyclists were rushed to a local hospital and last reported in critical condition.
"These were older gentlemen and they had Harley cruiser-style bikes," said Velasco. It wasn't immediately clear if the men were wearing helmets.
Two people were in the car, but the driver fled the scene after the crash. The passenger stuck around and is cooperating with police, but Velasco declined to say whether or not she knows where the driver might have gone.
"It's under investigation so we're not going to divulge too much," he said, adding that police are actively searching for the driver.
It's not yet known if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
The intersection was closed while police investigated, but has since reopened.
