Fugitive In Custody, Girlfriend Clings To Life After Jumping From SUV During Police Chase
SOUTHGATE (WWJ) - A wanted man is off the streets and his girlfriend is clinging to life after she jumped from his SUV during a police chase that ended in a crash with Michigan State Police cruisers on I-75.
The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. Wednesday when Garden City police observed a 1999 GMC Suburban with an improper license plate.
A check on the vehicle showed the registered owner, 35-year-old Daniel Ware of Detroit, was wanted for a felony extradition warrant out of West Virginia and a felony warrant for assault with a dangerous weapon and home invasion out of Macomb County.
At that time, officers attempted to stop the vehicle near the intersection of Ford and Venoy roads, but the driver -- later confirmed to be Ware -- fled. With their sirens and lights activated, the officers initiated a chase.
"During the pursuit, a 25-year-old female passenger, which ended up being Daniel Ware's girlfriend, jumped from the vehicle at 50 miles per hour. She was taken to Oakwood Hospital for her injuries and she's currently in critical condition," Garden City Police Lt. Michael Tackett told WWJ's Chris Renwick.
Also during the pursuit, Ware intentionally struck a Westland police car and made several attempts to intentionally collide with other police units, Tackett said.
The pursuit eventually ended on northbound I-75 at Allen Road in Southgate after Michigan State Police used a precision immobilization technique to end the pursuit. Two troopers received minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Ware, who received minor injuries in the crash, was taken into custody without further incident and lodged at Garden City Police Department. He is now facing several felony charges.
An investigation is ongoing.
