Techweek Highlights Detroit's Recent Resurgence, And How It Mirrors The Tech Industry

By Edward Cardenas

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - In just two years Detroit has seen a growth that mirrors some tech companies.

In a matter a months, some of these start-ups go from an idea to a working company providing a service and hiring employees. The city has experienced through a growth and renaissance at the speed of a tech firm.

The city went through a 17-month bankruptcy and now has nearly full-occupancy in downtown Detroit and growing wages, according to a recent report.

This link between the city and tech industry will be on display during the week-long Techweek Detroit.

"It's exciting to see what has happened over the past 12 months or the past 24 months (in Detroit)," said Allison Konkel, Techweek Detroit chief strategy officer. "It is a great metaphor for tech businesses. They grow a lot really quickly, and Detroit is doing that as well."

This is the second year Techweek has been held in Detroit. The week-long event, which began Monday and is presented by Quicken Loans, features a number of events throughout the week including presentations by 30 local and national industry leaders; a private screening of "Citizenfour," the Oscar-winning documentary about Edward Snowden; and a LAUNCH Competition which features 50 companies competing for $50,000 along with two days of summits at Ford Field.

There will also be a fashion show featuring the latest in tech wearables and more than 30 local and national speakers from a variety of firms including Rocketfiber, Verizon and Detroit Denim.
