As Michigan Roads Crumble, Capitol Dome Gets Overhaul With $6.4M Project

LANSING (AP) - Michigan's Capitol dome in Lansing is getting an overhaul as part of a $6.4 million project.

The Michigan State Capitol Commission says the dome will be covered in scaffolding until the fall as crews conduct restoration work.

John Truscott, vice chairman of the Capitol Commission, says Friday that the dome hasn't been repainted in 25 years and there is some decay. He says the scaffolding gives the building such a different look that it's something people remember each time it happens.

As part of the project, the dome's decorative elements will be replaced and repaired. The walls will be cleaned and repaired. The west entrance will be closed from mid-May to the end of June.

Details of the planned renovation earlier were reported by the Michigan Information & Research Service.
