Michigan Capitol Building Reopening For Saturday Tours
LANSING (AP) - Michigan's historic Capitol building is reopening to the public on Saturdays for the first time in years.
The State Capitol Commission voted Monday to again host free tours of the 136-year-old building on Saturdays, starting June 6.
The Capitol currently is open Monday through Friday. The downtown Lansing building will have hour-long guided tours on Saturday every half-hour between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The commission's vice chairman, John Truscott, says "not everyone can get here during the week" and unfortunately visitors are being turned away.
Saturday tours were ended between a dozen and nearly 20 years ago because of budget constraints. Truscott says it will cost roughly $33,000 annually to hire another tour guide.
Some 115,000 schoolchildren and others participate in guided tours of the building each year.
