DETROIT (WWJ) -- Charges were filed against a Detroit man in the shooting death of cab driver on Thursday.

Jalen Edwards, 21, of Detroit is accused of robbing and shooting Babul Miah, 41, on Ardmore St. on the city's west side on March 23.

Miah was on duty as a Checker Cab driver when Edwards allegedly robbed and fatally shot him at gunpoint. Edwards has been charged with first-degree murder, felony murder, armed robbery and felony firearm.

Officers were on routine patrol in a neighborhood near Schaefer and Fenkell Avenue when they observed a man quickly walk away from a Checker Cab.

As the officers approached man, he threw a handgun on the ground and started running. Officers followed the man and found him hiding in an abandoned house nearby.

While dealing with the suspect, the officers realized the yellow Checker Cab was still sitting in the street, immobile. After securing the suspect, the officers went over to the cab and found Miah unresponsive with a gunshot wound. He was declared dead at the scene.

Edwards is expected back in court for a probable cause hearing on April 28.
