DETROIT (WWJ) - A popular chew toy could put both dogs and humans at risk for Salmonella.

Nylabone Products is recalling one lot of its "Puppy Starter Kit" dog chews — because the treats could be contaminated with Salmonella.

According to the FDA, Salmonella can affect animals ingesting the contaminated product, and there is risk to humans who handle the chews  — especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

The product comes in a 1.69 oz. package marked with Lot #21935, UPC 0-18214-81291-3, and with an expiration date of 3/22/18, both stamped on the back of the package.

The kits were sold nationwide.

Symptoms of Salmonella in both pets and people include diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Pets with Salmonella infections may appear lethargic, and sometimes more serious ailments can occur.

Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans, the FDA says.

Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers; and those whose pets consumed the recalled product and and exhibit any of these symptoms should call their veterinarians.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the recalled chews.

Consumers are urged to discontinue use of the product and return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. Those with questions may contact the company at 1-877-273-7527, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Central time.
