Michigan Matters Exclusive: Road War Simmers Over Proposal 1

With voters going to the polls Tuesday to consider Proposal 1 -- the measure which raises the state's sales tax from 6 to 7 percent to help fix our roads -- was fodder for strong discussion as a supporter and opponents of the measure appeared on "Michigan Matters."

Buzz Thomas, of Thomas Consulting Group, has been working to convince voters they should support Proposal 1, adding "we have to fix our roads."

"What kind of state do we want to live in?" he added Economist Patrick Anderson and Paul Mitchell took the other side and shot holes at why voters should give it a resounding "no."

"We all agree that we need to fix our roads," said Anderson, "But Proposal 1 is not the way to do it."

Mitchell, a Republican from Saginaw who bankrolled an unsuccessful run for Congress last year, said he wasn't intending to get involved until he read Proposal 1 over the Christmas holiday.

"This will hurt our state, not help it," Mitchell said.

The show also talks about what happens if the measure fails on Tuesday.
