CBS DETROIT - When the Detroit Lions announced a slew of jersey number updates Tuesday, they mentioned that rookie guard Laken Tomlinson, the team's first-round pick this year, was in discussions with offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas about No. 77.

Lucas wore No. 77 as a rookie last season, and Tomlinson wore No. 77 at Duke. The Lions announced Wednesday that Tomlinson will wear No. 72, and Lucas explained why.

"77 is my lucky number and I would hate to get rid of it," Lucas said in a text message. "He's also a rookie so he has to start from the bottom like everybody else."

Tomlinson made Lucas an offer - Lucas declined to specify the amount - but he did not even consider it.

"I'm not going to say exactly what it was," Lucas said, "but he definitely tried to low ball me, so instead of going into deep debate, I told him that it would [be] best to just find another number and make it his own."

Lucas played in 15 games for the Lions last season.
