Ohio Asks Neighboring States To Help Fight Lake Erie's Algae

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Ohio's governor and environmental chief are asking leaders in some neighboring states to look at taking new steps at fighting the toxic algae blooms that have turned Lake Erie green in recent summers.

Officials in Ohio say taking on the algae is going to take a multi-state effort.

They've recently started talks with officials from Indiana, Michigan, and Ontario, Canada, about overall goals to reduce the algae linked to contaminated drinking water and dead zones where fish can't survive.

Much of the pollutants contributing to the algae are coming from Ohio.
But some also are flowing into the lake from farm fields in Michigan and Indiana, Detroit's wastewater plant and other sources outside Ohio.

Michigan and Indiana officials say they've already been making moves to cut down on their share.
