Michigan Lawmakers Vote To Allow Eviction Notices By Email

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan landlords could email eviction notices to tenants or notify them via social media under legislation headed to Gov. Rick Snyder's desk.

State law says landlords must deliver eviction notices in writing, either on site or by mail. A bill approved 26-11 by the Senate on Tuesday would permit electronic eviction notices if tenants consent earlier.

Supporters say the legislation reflects the changing behaviors of tenants. Not all tenants are requesting a mailbox or they are checking it infrequently while doing more personal business online.

Critics say people change their email addresses or might not see an eviction notice if it ends up in their junk folder.

The bill would prohibit landlords from refusing to enter leases because prospective tenants decline to consent to electronic eviction notices.
