Deputy Hospitalized After Being Shot In Northern Michigan

BOYNE VALLEY TOWNSHIP (AP) -- Northern Michigan authorities say a sheriff's deputy and a suspect in the theft of a pickup truck were wounded in a shootout.

The Charlevoix County sheriff's department said Sunday that Cpl. Fred Hasty was recovering after two hours of reconstructive surgery. There was no immediate word on the suspect's condition.

The shootings happened about 6 p.m. Saturday in Boyne Valley Township, about 45 miles northeast of Traverse City.

A department statement says Hasty was processing evidence from a pickup truck stolen from Boyne City when another deputy saw the suspect in a different vehicle.

The statement says the suspect drove off. It says he was stopped but he refused to get out of the vehicle.

It says the suspect shot Hasty, and Hasty and other officers returned fire, wounding him.
