Michigan Organizations Get $600K To Help Promote Cultural Understanding

LANSING (AP) — The Michigan Humanities Council has announced nearly $600,000 in grants to 26 Michigan organizations to help promote cultural understanding.

The money represents the first round of funding for the Heritage Grants program, which supports projects that bring authentic voices of cultural groups to the foreground. It also seeks to help Michigan residents understand cultural differences by sharing local stories about race and cultural history.

Jan Fedewa, the council's interim executive director, says in a statement that the programs "promote a deeper understanding of our past by empowering groups to tell their stories that remain unseen and/or unheard in the history of Michigan."

The funded projects include exhibits, digital projects, oral history programs and documentaries. A list of projects is posted on the council's website.
