Snapped Pole Impales Michigan Student Near Eye At Track Meet

DEXTER, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan high school athlete has been injured by a pole that snapped and became impaled near his eye during a track meet.

The Ann Arbor News reports (http://bit.ly/1Kp3ku5 ) that the Hartland High student was being treated Wednesday at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.

Hartland Athletic Director Jason Reck says the student was taking part Tuesday afternoon in the pole vault when his pole broke during a meet in Dexter, west of Detroit.

Part of the pole stuck in the student's orbital bone. His condition was not immediately available Wednesday. The student's name and age were not released.

Reck called the incident "just one of those unfortunate accidents" and said "we're just hoping for the best."
