'Medical Millennials' Include Southfield Grad Heading To Ethiopia In June

DETROIT (WWJ) - A local student is heading to Ethiopia for a "hands-on" learning experience.
She's part of a select group picked to study overseas.

And as Newsradio 950's Stephanie Davis reports, the group dubbed the 'Medical Millennials' need help making the trip.

Detroit native Sydney Johnson is one of 13 Howard University Medical students picked to study for 22 days at the University of Gondar in Ethiopia.

Johnson says it's a cultural and educational exchange.

"I'm looking forward to the opportunity to learn," she said.

The trip through the International Medical Interest group, is entirely student organized and funded, and they need help.

"It's around $3,000 per student and we've been looking to fundraise through our GoFundMe ... and we are asking ... family and friends and people who want to contribute if they could just give a little bit," she said.

Johnson, is a Southfield Lathrup graduate who is a second year med student. the 24-year old wants to specialize in cardiothoracic surgery with a focus in pediatrics.

The group leaves on June 11 for Ethiopia where they will practice and learn at the country's oldest university for the duration. Their costs include immunizations, travel, meals, lodging and other expenses.
