Police Stop Suspected Child Predator After Car Chase Through Royal Oak

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) -- A police chase has ended in Royal Oak as officers pursued a suspected child predator on Friday night.

The dramatic scene happened just before 9 p.m. Friday evening, ending with Michigan State Police arresting a suspect at I-696 and Van Dyke.

Lt. Mike Shaw explained the incident to WWJ Newsradio 950.

"The slow-moving pursuit went through Royal Oak onto Woodward," Shaw said. "From Woodward, it went southbound onto I-696 where the troopers became the primary vehicles involved. It was learned that this vehicle was wanted for attempting to lure a child into his vehicle."

Shaw said that while trying to flee, the suspect hit a squad car before being stopped.

"One of the troopers performed what is known as a pit maneuver, or basically spinning the vehicle out," Shaw said. "Troopers were able to surround the vehicle, at which time they were trying to get the individual to surrender. He refused from his vehicle, at which time one of the troopers was able to break one of the windows, get him out of that car and take him into custody."

The man faces charges from Royal Oak and Michigan State Police.
