Allen Park Police Department Closes Due To Flooding

ALLEN PARK (WWJ) The Allen Park Police Department was flooded from this weekend of unrelenting rain. And now, the facility is unusable.

Lt. Chris Egan has been with the department for about 20 years and he says he can't remember it being this bad. The Wyandotte Police Department is temporarily handling 911 dispatch calls for Allen Park.

"This isn't what we want to show the community," Egan said. "Allen Park deserves better, our officers deserve better, we obviously need a safe working environment to be in as well."

Egan says the detective bureau is completely flooded, hallways are soaked and soggy, and the kitchen area has been rendered useless because of all the rain.

Egan is hoping this will help spur residents to approve paying for a new complex.

"After the state takes us out of receivership, hopefully residents can find a way to get us a new City Hall and police station," Egan said.

According to The News-Herald, Allen Park's City Council had been seeking a new location for City Hall and police department for months "due to the increasingly poor conditions in the current building."

City Hall is moving to a new, temporary headquarters next week.
