Mass Gay Wedding Parade Expected To Draw Hundreds To Detroit Sunday

DETROIT (CBS DETROIT) - Hundreds are expected to walk down a very long aisle on Sunday in Detroit as part of a mass wedding procession.

Affirmations Executive Director Darrious Hilmon says they're hoping to create the world's largest wedding procession ever and reinforce the idea that "there is room for everyone here."

"Right now - with all of the conversations going on from the magazine cover with Caitlyn Jenner - this is such an important time," he said.

He says the time is right to celebrate the weddings of the couples married in Michigan in 2014.

Hilmon says the aim is to have the parade goers look like a "living float" and he thinks the couples will be dressed up.

"It may be a t-shirt that has a bow tie on it, it may be gowns from the actual weddings - we are really leaving that creativity up to the couples," said Hilmon. "I'm sure it's going to be colorful, lively and you may see floats - our float will be a human float - but we think that's going to be colorful enough."

He says the idea of the parade is about "visibility, exposure, we are citizens of this community - who may not be like someone else."

Hundreds of couples were married during a brief loophole last year when Michigan's gay marriage ban was ruled unconstitutional by a district court.

The decision has been appealed and until a decision is made by the appeals court no more same-sex marriages can take place.

An estimated 300 gay couples will march in the procession from the Chrysler House on Griswold at 11 a.m. on Sunday and make their way to Hart Plaza.
