Belle Isle To Host Series Of Events For Metro Detroit Senior Citizens

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A series of recreational and educational programs for seniors from Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties is coming to Detroit's Belle Isle.

Officials with Senior Power Days announced details of the 11 events this week on the Detroit River island park, northeast of downtown.

The sessions begin July 8 and run through Dec. 16. Each event will be held on a Wednesday.

Topics include senior safety, health concerns and veterans issues. Jazz concerts and faith-based activities also will be held. The state Department of Natural Resources manages Belle Isle through a lease agreement with the city and is presenting sponsor of the senior events.

Recreation Passports for entry to Belle Isle and all other state parks will be given to the first 500 participants at the July 8 program.

"Senior Power Days will provide plenty of great opportunities for seniors to learn about important and entertaining topics that can enhance their quality of life," Gov. Rick Snyder said in a statement. "Belle Isle provides the perfect backdrop for Detroit-area seniors to get outdoors, spend time with friends, and pick up some valuable information."

The Senior Power Days event schedule includes:

  • July 8 -- Senior safety summit
  • July 22 -- Jazz on the Isle
  • Aug. 5 -- Senior health and services day
  • Aug. 19 -- Belle Isle crawl of venues and sights
  • Sept. 9 -- Exercise and leisure day
  • Sept. 23 -- Special Detroit icon concert (details to be announced in July 2015)
  • Oct. 7 -- Jazz on the Isle in the casino
  • Oct. 21 -- Senior arts and craft day
  • Nov. 11 -- Veteran's Day celebration
  • Nov. 18 -- Interfaith day
  • Dec. 16 -- Holiday and senior recognition luncheon
