Detroit Man Sentenced To Prison In Death Of 13-Year-Old Girl Playing With Rifle

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A Detroit man held responsible for death of a 13-year-old girl who was shot while playing with a rifle in his home has been sentenced to prison.

Ivan Berrien, 45, learned his punishment Tuesday for child abuse and a gun charge. WDIV-TV reported the sentence includes two to 10 years on the child abuse charge, in the January incident on Lappin Street, near 7 Mile Road and Hayes.

Berrien, who pleaded guilty to child abuse, said he never intended for anyone to get hurt. He earlier was charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Cirla Bingham and Berrien's 14-year-old son were playing with the loaded weapon when it fired once, striking the girl in the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prosecutors said the two teens had been left home to watch three younger children, between the ages of five and seven, while Berrien went to pick up a pizza.

Police said the rifle was not properly secured.
