Michigan Gas Prices Nearing $3 Per Gallon Average

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Motorists around the Motor City have begun to notice roller coaster gas prices over the past few weeks. Some have been reporting seeing prices as high as $3 per gallon in some areas of Metro Detroit.

Authorities in Michigan have said that the average price has reached $2.90 per gallon -- about a 10-cent hike from Monday. AAA Michigan Public Affairs Director Susan Hiltz told WWJ Newsradio 950's Chrystal Knight that the usual suspects can be blamed for the increase.

"What we're really looking at is that we've had some refinery issues, so those will play out and increase the cost of gas in Michigan," Hiltz said. "There's also been some things happening in the Middle East that have a little bit of a bearing, because crude oil is really what has the biggest bearing on price increases."

Hiltz says they didn't expect to see prices hit 3.00 per gallon again so soon, but you can't predict maintenance issues.

"We're hoping we can ride it out and see some decreases in the coming weeks," Hiltz said. "We are a little bit surprised, but you cannot predict maintenance issues that come up at some of these refineries and you also can't predict what's happening in some of the war-torn nations."
