The Movie "Dope" Is An Inspiring Story About Perseverance

DETROIT (WWJ) - The movie "Dope" follows three teenagers as they navigate high school in dangerous Inglewood, California. Self-described geeks Malcolm, Diggy and Jib are inseparable, sticking together through all the trials and tribulations that come their way.

Speaking of trials and tribulations, in addition to finding ways to deal with bullies who continually harass them, their "geek-ness" does come in handy when they unexpectedly and unwittingly become drug dealers. That, after they accept an invitation to attend a birthday party hosted by, yes, a drug dealer. That's when their normal day-to-day lives change dramatically. In addition to running from a dangerous, rival drug dealer and coping with their own raging hormones, they're also busy trying to figure out how to get their lives back on track.

The writer/director of "Dope," Rick Famuyiwa says in an interview published in "Deadline Hollywood" that the main character is largely modeled after him. Famuyiwa also grew up within the tough confines of Inglewood, but through hard work and determination, he's managed to forge a successful career in Hollywood.

Although there are some "slow" points in "Dope," it's ultimately an inspiring story with a positive message. The movie shows what people can do if they believe in themselves and refuse to be pigeonholed. That alone is reason enough to see this film.
