Monroe County Teen Dies After Being Hit By Truck While Riding Bike

SUMMERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - Police say a 19-year-old who was struck by a pickup-truck while riding his bike down a Monroe County road has died from his injuries.

Sheriff Dale Malone said Kristopher Smith, of Petersburg, died Friday afternoon while receiving treatment at St. Vincent's Hospital in Toledo, Ohio.

According to police, Smith was riding his bike around 11:55 a.m. Friday on Deerfield Road, just west of Rose Road in Summerfield Township, when the accident happened. Police say Smith was riding in the westbound lanes of Deerfield Road when he was struck from behind by a Chevrolet pick-up truck.

Smith, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from his bicycle and came to rest on the roadway, near the rear portion of the pick-up truck. He was in critical condition when transported to the hospital by a Life Flight helicopter. Police say he died about four hours later.

The truck driver, a 63-year-old Deerfield man, was uninjured.

Police say alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 734-240-7493.
