Longest Day Of Year Sheds Light On Postpartum Depression

FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) - On the longest day of the year, warrior women take back their light, climbing out of the darkness of postpartum depression.

Both sufferers and survivors spent part of the day climbing, hiking, or walking at Heritage Park in Farmington Hills.

Postpartum Progress co-leader and volunteer Stephanie Roseman explains the purpose of holding the event on summer solstice Sunday:

"You are in a very dark place when you are suffering," explains Roseman, "so to climb out of the dark place you are in and find that light on the longest day of the year and really find your strength."

"To raise awareness and funds for an organization called Postpartum Progress - whose main mission is to ...be a support system for women who suffer from postpartum depression, anxiety, psychosis and all other related disorders," said Roseman.

Roseman says the site PostpartumProgress  helped her in the past.

"When I was suffering, I felt very alone and I really had been posting on there and realized I needed to get myself some help."

The 2015 goal is to raise $200,000 for the organization and special programs.
