Bomb Squad Called, Businesses Evacuated After Man Finds Live Grenade In Garage

BRANDON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A live grenade found in an Oakland County garage led to the evacuation of a few businesses Tuesday evening.

The Sheriff's Department said, at around 8:30 p.m., a man brought the grenade to the Brandon Township substation in hopes of getting rid of it.

Deputies saw the grenade in the man's vehicle, secured the area and evacuated some nearby buildings as a precaution. The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad was called in and disposed of the grenade, who Sheriff's officials said appeared to be functional.

The man told deputies he was helping the wife of a recently deceased friend, who was a veteran, to clean out the garage when he discovered what appeared to be a World War II era "pineapple" type of hand grenade, along with some black powder.

Authorities say people who find suspected explosives shouldn't touch them, but instead call police.  At no time should one pick up such an item and take it to a police or fire department.

No one was hurt.  An investigation is ongoing.
