Comcast Introduces New In-Game, MLB Stats Feature

By Edward Cardenas

SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - Major League Baseball fans who have the Xfinity X1 operating system will be on par with general managers with data and statistics through the new Baseball Extras feature.

Baseball Extras is available through the Xfinity Sports App with pre-game matchups, live batter-by-batter stats, and full post-game analysis on the same screen as the baseball game itself.

"With the addition of the Baseball Extras, the new X1 Sports app will be one of the most in-depth, TV sports companion tools in the country," said Preston Smalley, Executive Director, Product, Comcast Silicon Valley in TV, in a blog post.

The free feature launched this week for Xfinity customers who have the X1 platform.

Xfinity customers can access the information by launching the Sports app and selecting a game. They then can click on Extras and a series of real-time stats and visualizations will appear on the right-hand side of the screen in a rotating, carousel fashion. This is similar to the sports graphics and news tickers.

The app pulls in, and aggregates, data from several sources to rate games based on team records, compute each team's win probability and preview pitching matchups.

Then during the game, real-time stats and analysis such as strike-out percentages, pitch counts, hit zones and spray charts. After the game, the app will show a post-game recap that also includes which players racked up the most fantasy points.

The app can be accessed by simply pressing the "C" button on the remote or launching Sports from inside the Apps menu.

Baseball Extras is also available when fans are not watching the game. The app will display information while other shows or movies are on television

Other sports including the NFL, NBA, NHL and other major sporting events are expected to be added in the future.
