Driver Going 90 MPH On Southfield Freeway Arrested After Fight With Trooper

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 25-year-old wanted man has been taken into custody after an altercation with police on the Southfield Freeway -- thanks in part to a retired Michigan State Police trooper.

The incident unfolded around 12:25 p.m. Tuesday on northbound M-39 near Warren Avenue in Detroit.

Police say a trooper was patrolling on a motorcycle when he clocked a Chevrolet SUV speeding by at 90 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone. The trooper activated the lights on his motorcycle and the SUV merged into the right lane, nearly hitting another car in the process, police said.

As the vehicle stopped, police say the driver jumped over the back seat and into the trunk area of the SUV. The trooper approached the driver's side door and could see that a woman was in the front passenger seat. She was instructed to shut the vehicle off as the man climbed back over the seat.

Police say the man then tried to get out of the vehicle through the front driver's side door. As the trooper attempted to arrest the man, he tensed up and pulled away. A struggle ensued, during which the man struck the trooper in the helmet.

The man tried to run away, police said, but the trooper grabbed him and both fell to the ground. Police say the trooper continued to give loud verbal commands but the man keep resisting and would not give up his hands.

As the altercation continued on the shoulder of M-39, a retired trooper traveling down the freeway noticed the fight and stopped to assist the trooper in securing the suspect.

Once the man was apprehended, a check of his identification revealed a warrant for a probation violation out of Monroe County. He was processed and lodged at the Monroe County Jail for the probation violation. Additional charges are being sought through the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.

The trooper, who sustained minor injuries, was wearing a body camera as part of a test project. WWJ is working to obtain the video.

The man's name has not yet been released, although police say he's from Newport.
