State Of Detroit Families: Rainbows, Stars And Stripes

By Sharlonda Buckman, CEO, Detroit Parent Network

Last week my Facebook feed turned into a sea of rainbows. Many friends and acquaintances added rainbows to their Facebook pictures to support marriage equality. A historic Supreme Court decision prompted people to share their viewpoints on equality colorfully.

It's true that even though millions support marriage equality, some folks still define marriage more traditionally. Whether you agree with the Supreme Court or not, one thing is clear: families can't be defined in only one way.

As a parent and as leader of a parent organization, I know how incredibly valuable it is for children to experience multiple perspectives and to be able to understand that there are many ways to be a family. In short: one size does not fit all. Teaching children tolerance breeds inclusion and curiosity; the skills that equip our young ones to be humane and productive leaders.

This week, expose your children to a new idea. What might feel unfamiliar or strange could actually open the floodgates of deep learning. As I wave my American flag on Independence Day I celebrate the free speech that our founders imagined. Our children can grow up in a nation where their voice matters.

Make your voice heard. Chime in and stay connected to the state of families in Detroit and become more involved. By joining Detroit Parent Network, you can gain access to trainings, workshops, and parent support groups, among many other benefits.
