The University of Michigan....Wallabies?

The little marsupial spent some time as an unofficial mascot over the past week, as players from the Michigan football and hockey teams showed off their new "pet" on social media.

Quarterback Shane Morris tweeted out a photo of the little guy, accusing teammate Jack Wangler of wanting to keep the 4-month-old wallaby -- named Samson -- in their home.

It turns out that the animal actually belonged to hockey player Cutler Martin, according to MLive. Martin was attempting to sell Samson online for more than $2000. The listing read:

"Baby Wallaby for sale. He is a male and 2 months out of his moms pouch. He is very well socialized and loves to be pet and handled. He is transitioning from multiple bottles per day to just one and loves his solid food already. Drinks out of a water dish and loves his pouches! Great family pet. Follows whoever takes care of him around the house or yard! Txt for more information $2250"

Martin was contacted by PETA official Brittany Peet, who said she would give Martin $500 to give Samson to the Detroit Zoo. Martin declined, but eventually returned the wallaby to its breeder, Jan Holstege.

"A wallaby doesn't belong in a private home any more than a wolverine does," Peet told the Detroit News.
