Red Wings Assign Jersey Numbers, Sign Goalie

By Edward Cardenas

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - The Detroit Red Wings announced Thursday the jersey numbers for two, newly acquired players.

Brad Richards, who played last season for the Stanley Cup champions Chicago Blackhawks, will wear number 17.

Mike Green, who played 10 years with the Washington Capitals, will wear a jersey with the number 25.

Following the signing of Richards, there was a question about what number he would wear. He wore 91 in Chicago, which is the number Sergei Fedorov wore when he played in Detroit.

With the election of Federov to the Hockey Hall of Fame, there had been question if the number would be retired.

Although team officials have not decided if 91 will be raised to the rafters of Joe Louis Arena, Fedorov did share his thoughts previously about the honor.

"I think people in Red Wings organization will decide that at some point, if they will, and it would be great honor, but if not, it's still awesome to be part of it," he told CBS Detroit.

Green is wearing 25, which was last worn by Darren McCarty.

The team also announced that it agreed to terms with goaltender Jared Coreau on a one-year contract. Coreau was signed as a free agent in April 2013 following a three-year collegiate career at Northern Michigan University, and has split time in each of his professional seasons between the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins and the ECHL's Toledo Walleye.

Details of the signing were not released.

The story was updated at 2:06 p.m. Thursday.
