Fire Destroys Much Needed Supplies At Domestic Violence Shelter

MACOMB COUNTY (WWJ) - A fire at domestic violence shelter destroyed much needed supplies for women and children and damaged a portion of the building.

No one was injured during the blaze which started in a dryer at the Turning Point Domestic Violence Shelter.

Karan Bates-Gasior of Turning Point says work continues to repair to the county's only domestic violence shelter after heavy smoke and water damage to the lower level.

"We lost car seats and strollers because our children's supple area was right next to where the fire was -- our food pantry was destroyed basically anything that wasn't in a can was soaked and waterlogged," said Bates-Gasior.

Work on repairing the laundry facilities and food pantry are expected to take until the end of summer.

"We certainly could still use a lot of food items, clothing and under-clothing for the residents both women and children," she said.

Donations of food, clothing and baby items are being accepted, you can find contact information [here].
