Silverdome Parking Lot To Host Festival With Drag Strip

PONTIAC (WWJ/AP) - A parking lot at the Pontiac Silverdome is expected to be the site of a one-day car festival that will include a drag strip.

The Pontiac Planning Commission on Wednesday approved a permit for the Aug. 12 event that also will feature a band, food trucks and thrill rides. The festival is scheduled a few days before the annual Woodward Dream Cruise.

The event will be televised, with Discovery and Motor Trend television shows "Gas Monkey Garage" and "Roadkill" taking part, according to the Oakland Press.

The drag strip will stretch diagonally from Featherstone Road to Opdyke Road, with speeds estimated to reach 90 mph.

The event is expected to be free to attend, but advanced registration may be required.

The Detroit Lions last played at the Silverdome in 2002 before moving to Ford Field in Detroit. The stadium has fallen into disrepair, with its roof damaged in a 2013 winter storm, and many items from the stadium were auctioned off last year.

The Silverdome was put up for sale last month with a price tag of $30 million after being bought for $583,000 six years ago.
