Presidential Hopeful Bernie Sanders Hits Michigan House Party Circuit

DETROIT (CBS DETROIT) - Talk about a house party.

Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders will appear in thousands of homes, restaurants and meeting halls Wednesday evening -- as he steps up his grassroots campaign via video.

Karissa Prikopa is hosting the Detroit event at the "Hop Cat" on Woodward. She says the response has been overwhelming:

"So, were the other campaigns are busy putting the money together to finance this huge machine - Bernie is doing the same thing via internet," says Prikopa. "It's incredible."

Prikopa says the Detroit gathering is at "fire code" capacity and other events have been forced to find larger venues.

She believes the Democrat has touched a chord with the "Millennial" generation in particular because of his proposals on the high cost of college.

"Bernie Sanders is hitting on issues that directly affect the middle class, the under-privileged, the education system, health care - these things touch us on a daily basis and people are ready for change. They are ready for better lives."

The Ann Arbor event got so large, the campaign's website says the event had to be moved to the U of M's "Michigan League." More than 3,000 events are being hosted across the country.

Sanders is scheduled to appeared via the internet during the gatherings which are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
