Online Donors Back Brothers Paralyzed In Separate Accidents

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - Online donations are pouring in for two brothers from Kalamazoo who were paralyzed in accidents eight months apart.

As of Monday, an account on the website GoFundMe had raised about $51,648 to help pay for expenses for Adam and Matt Chaffee.

In November 2014, Matt Chaffee was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident, and his brother cared for him. Adam Chaffee, a senior at Western Michigan University, injured his spinal cord in a swimming accident late last month, and he's in stable condition at Bronson Methodist Hospital.

An update on their GoFundMe site says that Adam was breathing on his own, without the aid of a ventilator over the weekend.  There have been over 5,000 shares of the story on social media.

Matt Chaffee had moved in with his brother, and he says the online donations will likely make it possible for them to stay together and live independently.
