'One Round For Andrew' Looks To Raise Money For Boy Born With Half A Heart

DETROIT (CBS DETROIT) - They fight crime together and now the Wayne County Sheriff's Deputies are uniting to help support one of their own whose son has a major heart ailment.

Wayne County Sheriff's Sergeant Charles Locano's 10-year-old son, Andrew, was born with half a heart. He's been in and out of the hospital for years -- and the family has struggled financially due to the mounting medical bills.

Calling the fundraiser One Round for Andrew the goal is to raise thousands of dollars for the boy who has had three open heart surgeries in his young life.

Many deputies and other staffers will be donating an hours worth of pay to help support Locano.

"We can't thank everybody enough for everything they have done for us and hopefully someday we can pay-it-forward and help somebody else who is in the same situation as us," said Sheila Locano. "The last five years ... have been very tough but we are getting through it with the support of family and friends and co-workers."

The fundraiser, which culminates in September, is spearheaded by DeWayne Hayes Foundation with a focus on pledges made by anyone donating one hour's pay of work.

"A true testament as to how police officers stick together - it's a big wonderful family," says Charles Locano.

"It's nice that they are doing this for me," says Andrew. "And --- that -- they are doing this for me."
