Ypsilanti Man Brings Dirty Socks Instead Of Pot To Drug Deal

ADRIAN, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A Michigan man who brought a backpack stuffed with dirty socks to a couple looking to buy a pound of marijuana is facing prison time.

The Daily Telegram of Adrian reports the fraudulent July 8 marijuana sale in Lenawee County's Raisin Township was described Wednesday in Circuit Court when Michael Rafael Suarez of Ypsilanti pleaded guilty to false pretenses.

Suarez said Wednesday the whole thing started with a call from a friend who told him to bring a pound of marijuana for some people who were looking to buy.

The 33-year-old says he "didn't bring any weed" and instead had "a bag of dirty socks" when he met up with an Ypsilanti couple whom he tricked into getting into a car with him.

The three were stopped by police when they ran a stop sign and a man told officers that he and his girlfriend were robbed. Authorities say $2,800 in cash was taken during the would-be drug deal.

The couple Suarez, Joshua Wayne Cope, 37, and Rebecca Sue Sharp, 34 — also pleaded guilty to reduced charges. They'd left their four kids with a grandparent, Sharp's attorney said, while they went out shopping for pot.

As part of a plea agreement, an unarmed robbery count against Suarez is to be dismissed.  He faces up to 7 1/2 years in prison when sentenced Sept. 3.
