Homeland Security Conducts Mock Exercises To Test Communications Along US-Canada Border

DETROIT (AP) - Mock exercises will test the effectiveness of communications across the border between the U.S. and Canada.

Wayne County's Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Management is working with first responders from Detroit, elsewhere in the U.S. and Canada on Wednesday's drills.

Crews will use equipment and training they obtained with help from a $4 million grant awarded to Wayne County. The funds were part of the Border Interoperability Demonstration Project and were used to boost communication and collaboration.

Improvements were made at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, a communications tower in Ecorse and elsewhere.

The Wayne County Airport Authority; emergency management officials in Macomb, Monroe and Chippewa counties in the U.S; and officials with the Windsor, Sault Ste. Marie, Essex County and LaSalle in Canada are among those involved in the effort.
