Straight Outta Compton: Powerful Story, Awesome Movie

DETROIT (WWJ) - "Straight Outta Compton" is the powerful true story about life in the hood and what the five young men who formed the hip hop group N.W.A. went through to get out.

Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, MC Ren and DJ Yella formed N.W.A. The group used hardcore beats and raw lyrics to expose what life was like living in Compton, California during the late '80s. Life for them was like living in a war zone. Along with the gangsters and drug dealers, there were cops who would stop young black men just because they were black and looked, in their opinion, like they were up to no good. Never mind that they may have been just trying to cross the street; or leaning into a car talking to someone; or even simply minding their own business! If the police saw them, those young men could go from being innocent bystanders to becoming the target of cops who just didn't like the color of their skin.

The members of N.W.A. were fed up with how they were being treated and decided to use their music to stand up to the authorities. Their music was groundbreaking and had people everywhere taking notice. You may even remember that one of their songs in particular attracted the attention of not just the police, but also the FBI.

"Straight Outta Compton" is an exceptional and well-made film. The actors portraying the members of N.W.A. not only have the look, they have the swagger, along with the skill to make it feel like history is unfolding right before your eyes.

DRE, COREY HAWKINS as Dr. Dre, JASON MITCHELL as Eazy-E and O'SHEA JACKSON, JR. as Ice Cube on the set of "Straight Outta Compton". Taking us back to where it all began, the film tells the true story of how these cultural rebels—armed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado and raw talent—stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world's most dangerous group, N.W.A.

"Straight Outta Compton" is a powerful story about not just life in the hood, but also about friendship, brotherhood and persevering against all odds. Go see it. You won't be disappointed.
