Massive Potholes 'Eating Cars Up' On I-75 During Morning Rush Hour

DETROIT (WWJ) - Large potholes on northbound I-75 in southwest Detroit causing a major Monday morning headache for rush hour drivers. At least two dozen cars have hit the potholes and have flat tires.

Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) spokesperson Daine Cross telling WWJ that there are two potholes along the freeway; one on I-75 at Dearborn street and a second large pothole in the center right lane, just further north of the first pothole.

WWJ's Bill Szumanski reporting from over the scene in WWJ NewsChopper 950:

"On the Fisher Freeway over the Rouge Bridge - here at the tail end of it, we can actually see all the way through the road. Yes, one more of these large potholes - that is just opening itself up by the minute. It's in the right center lane on northbound I-75 just before Springwells -- we are up to 22 vehicles with flat tires -- all on the right shoulder. Courtesy vans are here, police are here, the wrecker is here as well," reports Szumanski.

State Police are on the scene. MDOT says contractors are on the way to fill those holes  and that will close the two right lanes (from Schaefer to Springwells) coming over the top of bridge heading toward downtown.

One Michigan State Police dispatcher said the hole in the right lane is "eating cars up."
